API Issues
As a Berkeley City Council Member, KRISS has…
1. Supported ethnic studies and full access to education for undocumented immigrants.
2. Supported assistance to the API Community in the Gulf impacted by Katrina, and the BP oil disaster.
3. Supported maintaining family reunification immigration.
4. Appointed the most APIs to city commissions of any Berkeley City Council member. He appointed Danfeng Koon, a founder of REACH!, to the Zoning Adjustments Board. REACH! member, Mike Sheen, was his legislative staff and served with distinction on the Police Review Commission. Mona Patel worked for him and built connections that enabled her to be elected to the Rent Board. Howard Chong served as his Solid Waste Commissioner before getting elected to his current seat on the Rent Board. And Laury Thammavong is now a commissioner for the Early Childhood Education Commission.
5. Supported Filipino Veterans’ demands for full health and equal treatment with other Vets.
6. Protested media misrepresentation of Asians and promulgation of extreme stereotypes
7. Supported decreasing the backlog of citizenship applications.
8. Supported social service benefits for disabled and low income immigrants.
9. Opposed forced deportation to South East Asia.
10. Actively lobbied to support the statewide API advisory board that the Governor proposed eliminating.
