Young People and Students: Empowering Leadership for the Future

Kriss Worthington is the go-to guy if you want progressive ideas to become reality. He shepherds groundbreaking legislation through the lengthy City process, including the Living Wage, Equal Benefits, Precautionary Principle, and Zero Waste ordinances. Kriss leaps to the defense of workers organizing unions and negotiating reasonable contracts. He obtains funding for community-service agencies and affordable housing. He improves services for seniors and people with disabilities, and works hard to increase racial, gender, and age diversity in City government. He has also helped defeat many horrible proposals, while being a persistently "calm, cool, and collected" advocate for all of us.

Kriss's Track Record

• As a City Councilmember Kriss Worthington helped students win 1,000 additional beds of student housing, even though the previous chancellor said none were needed.
• Appointed over 80 students to City commissions more than all City Councilmembers in Berkeley's history!
• Helped elect 2 students currently on the City's rent Board.
• Has campaigned actively for student candidates for Berkeley's School Board and City Council.
• Fought alongside students for lower student fees. On numerous occasions, he has lobbied legislators in Sacramento, and spoken to the Board of Regents.
• Worked with over 200 students changing City policy on late-night hours, & succeeded in getting many businesses near campus to stay open later.
• Defeated efforts to move elections to the summer when students were not in town, and supported Instant Run-Off (IRV) elections to avoid the dramatic downturn in student turnout in runoffs during finals and holidays.
• Supported students who wrote a proposal for public finance of elections in Berkeley.
• In a City where racial diversity is often more a buzzword than a reality, Kriss advocated strongly for reaching out to everyone and has appointed the most Asians, the most Latinos, and the most students.
• Sponsored a resolution calling on the Berkeley City Council to commit matching funding ($7,500) to support the Cal Campus Neighborhood Watch Program.
